In the face of the cold temperatures and nasty weather, many homeowners decide to do what the birds do and fly south for the winter! Migrating to a warmer vacation spot during these dreary months can be a good way to get some much-needed sun, but are you leaving your home undefended in the process? Follow these essential home safety tips before you venture out on a winter vacation.
When you leave your home unattended for weeks on end, you may leave it vulnerable to break-ins, damages, and other unforeseen circumstances that will end up costing you. By following these tips, however, you can rest assured that you will return from your vacation to a home just as you left it.
1.) Lock all doors and windows. While homeowners typically remember to lock the front door, side doors, exterior basement doors, and windows often go neglected. Double-check before you leave to ensure no points of entry are left unlocked.
2.) Unplug your electronics. If left plugged in, not only will electronics such as laptops, phone chargers, and hairdryers continue to use up electricity, but they can also pose a fire hazard. Do a run-through of your home and unplug these items before you head out.
3.) Put a hold on your mail deliveries. If your mail, newspapers, and packages start to pile up, it may indicate to potential intruders that you are not at home. You can either elect to put a hold on your deliveries while you are away or ask a neighbor or family member to bring mail inside and to check up on the house in the process.
4.) Take note of valuables. If you have an extensive collection of valuables, photograph and log them in a list. If anything does happen while you are away, you will be able to file an insurance claim more easily with these handy references.
