The Basics of Motorcycle Safety

Summertime is easily the most popular season for motorcycles. You never know how many vehicles could be on the road when you take your motorcycle out, and safety is essential whether you are riding alone or with friends. Here are some ways you can protect yourself and your motorcycle by riding smart.

Be Prepared

One of the most common motorcycle stereotypes is that it is way too dangerous. And while it’s true that you don’t have the same protection as a car if you got in an accident, there are several ways to prepare yourself that can make you much safer. First, you should make sure that you have the proper gear. Even if it’s hot outside, it’s best to have full-coverage clothing. There are many places that you buy riding clothes specifically for motorcycles, but you should at least have on long pants and long sleeves because this will reduce your chances of injury if you skid on the road. Above all, make sure that you have a regulation helmet that fully covers your face. There are so many riders who just use a simple bucket-type motorcycle helmet with virtually no padding, but that will hardly protect you in a crash.

Maintenance

It’s equally critical that you keep your motorcycle in good condition. If you are taking out your bike for the first time all season, then you should give it a maintenance check before you ride. Test the brakes, tires, chain, battery, and other main components to see if everything is working properly. Most motorcycle accidents won’t involve anyone but the one motorcyclist, and that’s often because of breakdowns.

Stay Aware

Cars are supposed to share the road, but as you have probably experienced before, not all drivers are as careful. And sometimes, people on motorcycles recklessly weave around cars or squeeze between the lines in a traffic jam. This makes motorcycle riders everywhere look bad, so make sure you do your part and follow all the traffic rules. Because cars can’t stop or turn as quickly as motorcycles, try to give them a wide berth if you can. If you have to unexpectedly swerve around something, like an animal or debris, then you don’t want to end up in the path of a car who won’t brake fast enough.
