Purchasing a First Car for Your Child

Here are some of the most important considerations that go into picking out your child’s first car.

It’s a big investment to get a new car, and you know that for your growing child this will probably be one of the most important gifts of their life. When you are car shopping, there are a lot of factors to consider to make sure that your child will be safe on the road. Here are some of the most important considerations that go into picking out your child’s first car.

Size and Type

The basic starting point for choosing a car is its size. After all, a mini cooper or beetle won’t handle the same as a pickup truck or SUV. When it comes to the size of a vehicle for a new driver, bigger is usually better. A larger car will have more presence on the road, which will make it more visible to other drivers. Also, larger cars usually offer more protection in an accident. You know your child, and if they are uncomfortable driving a very large vehicle, then look for something in the mid-size range. Regardless, you should avoid giving your child something fast, like a sportscar, until they are more experienced behind the wheel.

Cars today come with even better safety features. There is Electronic Stability Control, or ESC, which can help your driver stay in control of the vehicle. Blindspot alerts and backup cameras can help prevent hitting something out of the line of sight. But keep in mind that, while safety features are always a good thing, too much automation can become a crutch for a new driver. For example, if you have a car with automatic parallel parking, encourage your new driver to practice parallel parking on their own first.

Safety Ratings

Safety ratings are probably the most useful in picking out a new car. After all, professionals have crash-tested each car in order to give it their rating. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rating of four out of five stars at least would be ideal. One way you can be certain that your new car will be safe is if it has been tested and proven, which is the benefit of a safety rating. Also, in some cases, cars will better safety ratings can positively impact your car insurance.
