Nobody likes the thought of strangers breaking into their home and stealing personal belongings. But aside from reinforcing your doors and investing in security fences or home security systems, there are a few simple things that you can do to help keep your home from becoming a target.
Don’t Advertise Your Valuables
You would be surprised at how many ways people unintentionally broadcast to burglars all of the things they have that are worth stealing. Jewelry holders are a great way to display your necklaces and earrings so that they won’t end up in a tangle, but you obviously don’t want to leave it sitting by a window in plain sight. Even if you are careful to lock up jewelry in a safe or to deadbolt your doors, there are unexpected ways that you could be letting passersby know what’s in your house. For example, if you get a new flat screen TV or expensive electronics, then don’t put the boxes out on the curb for all to see. Instead, cut up the boxes before you recycle them.
Watch Out for Weak Spots
There is a saying that most burglars are opportunists; they are only likely to break in if they see a weak spot that will make it easy. That said, a good exercise is to take a look at your home from the eyes of a potential intruder. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a big iron fence. In fact, large fences that block the view of your house from the outside can be more inviting for burglars because they know that they have a cover. Make sure to trim trees and bushes that would provide good places to hide, and don’t leave any large rocks or tools outside that could be used to break a window. Another thing, be sure to have a trusted neighbor or friend housesit when you go on vacation. It’s better not to give away the details of your trip, such as how long you’re away, on social media, that way potential burglars won’t think that they have an easy target.
