Home Insurance Tips for Living On Your Own

Have you recently started living on your own? Whatever the reason, don’t forget about home insurance!

Have you recently started living on your own? Whatever the circumstances around your change in living arrangements are, you should always consider the merits of home insurance, or in some cases, renters insurance. Even if you don’t have anyone else sharing your life or living space, that doesn’t mean you don’t need life insurance, either. So if you’re alone, follow some of these helpful tips!

Befriend Your Neighbors

While it may not be as easy to get to know your neighbors now as it was in college, you still should try. Start by introducing yourself and exchanging contact information. You don’t have to become best friends, but as long as you are friendly enough for them to recognize your routine, they might be able to tell if something is wrong.

Keep Your Phone Close

Whenever you leave, always check to make sure you have your phone, keys, and wallet. Even when you are relaxing on the couch in your pajamas, or busy running in and out on errands such as laundry and accidentally lock yourself out, keeping your phone and these other essentials on hand will be a tremendous help. When your phone is close by, you can quickly make a call or send a text if you get into trouble or get hurt and need urgent help.

Increase Your Security

Another valuable home insurance tip to follow is to increase your security. Whether you live in an apartment, a condo, or a house, you’re at higher risk of burglary when you live alone. There are advanced security systems available that you can control from your phone. If you can’t afford such a system or aren’t interested in one, there are other measures you can take. For instance, use motion-sensor lights, lamp timers, and radios to give the impression that you are home. Keep your curtains closed while you’re gone, and even in this social media age, don’t post any vacation photos online until after you’ve returned.

Think About Home Insurance

If you live alone in your own house, you should get homeowners insurance. If you’re in an apartment, make sure your renters insurance is up to date. Always review your policy every year or so to ensure that it covers what you think it will.  Lastly, life insurance will also ease funeral expenses for your estate and help your friends and family process your untimely passing.
