3 Tips to Promote Workplace Safety

Here are a few things you can do to increase safety in the workplace.

Safety is especially important when you are running a business. There are many reasons to make sure that your employees are working in a safe environment including protecting your insurance rates, preventing lawsuits, and saving money on worker’s compensation. But most importantly, having a safe work environment reflects positively on your business and is one of the best ways to show the workers you are entrusted with that you care about their well-being. Here are a few things you can do to increase safety in the workplace.

Post safety guidelines

The first thing you should do is put all of your safety regulations, warnings and guidelines out in an area where your employees can see them. A common place to post this information is on a bulletin board in the break room, for example. You should always include a poster that explains legal particulars such as the Maryland workers compensation laws. Every new person that you hire should be informed of the safety regulations during training. You don’t want to put yourself in the position of risking a lawsuit from an employee because they did not have fair warning.

Emergency Preparedness

One of the best things that you can do for your employees and your company is create an emergency plan. This is typically for fires, power outages, and natural disasters, such as hurricanes or earthquakes, and even terrorist attacks. Simply chart an emergency escape map of your building as well as a list of instructions for how to evacuate and where a safe meeting place is. Extreme disasters might be rare, but it is better to be prepared for unlikely circumstances than assume it would never happen.

Provide Incentives

Another way that you can promote safety in your workplace is by finding ways to encourage your employees to uphold safety rules. You can offer rewards and bonuses for reporting safety concerns, for example. You can also upgrade protective gear and safety signage such as emergency exits, offer paid breaks, or give instructional sessions on proper posture.
