Home Insurance Tips: Preparing Your Home for This Winter, Part 2

Even if the inside of your home is prepared, here are some home insurance tips to make sure the outside is just as ready for the change in seasons.

Winter is still on its way, and it’s not too soon to get ready. Even if the inside of your home is prepared, here are some home insurance tips to make sure the outside is just as ready for the change in seasons.

Your Gutters

Make sure you clean out your gutters and the downspouts connected to them. Clogged gutters won’t work as well as clear gutters, and water damage can ruin your home’s exterior and foundations. These are huge home insurance headaches, so get out ahead of any potential problems. Use a ladder and wear enough protective equipment to keep your eyes, hands, and arms safe from scratches or other possible injuries.

Your Roof

Snow can also cause your roof to cave in. When this happens, it also means higher home insurance rates. Make sure your roof won’t collapse before it has to bear the worst of what winter has to offer this year. If shingles are missing, or the caulk has worn out, then replace them. Keep an eye out for moss, mold, or mildew, as all of these pests can cause even more damage to your roof, especially if it has already been damaged by water, wind, ice, or low-hanging tree branches.

Your Landscape

Low hanging tree branches can damage your roof, but can also snag power lines that are caught by strong winds. Monitor the health of the trees on your property, since loose limbs can break off and damage your home and your car. It’s better to be prepared now than risk problems later on that might be too expensive for you to solve, even with your home insurance policy in place.

Preparing for Snow

Even though it feels like the rain will never go away, in some areas of the country it’s no surprise that they are already getting snow. Prepare for snow to arrive in your neighborhood today. Make sure your snowblower works, double check your snow shovels, get ice melt and sand, and get a snow rake if you don’t already have one. With this tool, you can clear away snow that has piled up on your roof.
