Winter is one of the worst times of the year when it comes to maintaining and cleaning your home. Both are essential tasks, especially when you want to remove risks that can make your home insurance rates go up. If your home feels too drafty, that means the cold wind from outside is getting in somehow. Don’t let the polar vortex make you feel miserable in your living room! Here is some advice for dealing with draftiness.

Look at Windows and Doors

The most obvious culprit for draftiness could be a problem with windows and doors. Make sure all the sash locks are secure. Then, ensure that all of the window seals are intact. When it comes to windows that you don’t open and close as often, you can use caulking them and keep them shut until spring comes back. Add weatherstripping to exterior doors as well.

Fix the Chimney

Although you might not see them at first, there could be problems with your home’s chimney. Even if you are no masonry experts, there are still some fixes you can complete on your own. By dealing with these problems, you can adjust your home insurance rates to go down. Try using a chimney balloon if you don’t use your chimney all that often, except on special occasions (such as making s’mores with your family!) Even though these items aren’t expensive, they are incredibly useful. However, you need to be sure that there is nothing in the way the next time you start the fire in the fireplace – take the balloon out!

Add Insulation

Adding insulation is another helpful suggestion that you might not immediately think of. Packing attics and lofts can be a great way to cut down on how cold and drafty your home is this winter, but you need to be careful about how you do it. Wearing the correct gear, such as face masks, goggles, and sleeves can help you immensely. Not only will it be cold up in the attic, but you will want to protect your face, hands, and lungs from anything that could come across while you work.
