How to Protect Your Pet During a Hurricane

You probably already have an evacuation plan for your family. Does it include your pet?

Did you know that we’re in the middle of hurricane season? August through October are when hurricanes occur most frequently, and September is when they hit their peak. Do you have a plan to protect your pet if a hurricane hits?

Many of the people in New Orleans who suffered from Hurricane Katrina did not have a pet evacuation plan in place. An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 pets were lost to the storm. About 44% of people who stayed in New Orleans did so to stay with their pets. After this event, Congress passed the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act in 2006. This act requires that local jurisdictions have a pet evacuation plan in place in order to qualify for FEMA funding during a natural disaster. This act has likely saved thousands of pets’ lives since it was passed. If you don’t have a pet evacuation plan in place, here are some tips to make sure your pet stays safe during a storm. (more…)
